Permanent Exhibition
The Permanent Exhibition of the Royal Veiga Factory Industrialisation Nucleus is structured having in mind the most important operation of the wool transformation in cloths. That way, it presents the Wool Preparing, Spinning, Weaving, and Finishing, underlining their technological evolution.
Furthermore, the Permanent Exhibition should allow untangling the local contributions from the external influences, regarding both the manufacturing organisation and the machinery import mainly from the English, Belgian, German, Spanish and French major industrial centres and should also identify the technological transferences that were carried out.
As far as design is concerned, the presentation of products will enable the confrontation between the Italian, French and English influences and the local traditional model, and will help to stress the influence of teaching ministered by the Industrial School Campos Melo of Covilhã which had direct implications in this domain, as well as to identify the various types of cloths, trade marks and the quality control processes that were implemented.
The daily life of the working and business environment are represented in their own space.
The museological course of the Exposição Permanente begins in Floor 0, through the Introduction: from wool to woollen manufacture, theme aimed to the wool geographic contextualisation of the wool and the wool industry, followed by a representation about the manufacturing and business world. The expositive course keeps on, through Floor -1, o marked by the strong presence of a steam boiler and subordinated to the energy sources theme. Afterwards, there is a contextualisation of the role of the working class in the industry, in the space named workingmen locker room and the dyeing and the finishing operations are presented. Next, there is the archaeological area where the primitive steam boilers structures are preserved. Next, we have access to the contiguous area where the wool preparing to the spinning, carding and combing operations are presented. The expositive course goes to Floor 1, where the spinning, preparation for weaving, weaving and finishing operations are presented, ending in the woollen cloth warehouse.
